It has been a really busy start to the year for me, but I found a little time to have a day off with my lovely mum to go on a gin tour and tasting at Kingsbarns Distillery (click here to find out more about the Darnley’s Gin tour). My mum isn’t a big drinker but when she does she loves a gin. I used to think I didn’t like gin but now there are so many different varieties I am really starting to love it.
I decided to write about the distillery on the blog as we enjoyed it so much I thought it would be the perfect idea for a hen or stag party. There is a lovely café in the distillery where we had lunch and beautiful grounds all around. They also offer private meals and events. Click here for more information.
When we arrived for our tour we had such a friendly welcome. My dad was our designated driver and the lovely staff told him he could join us on our tour and have mini jars to take his gin home with him.
It was a quiet weekday so it was just the 3 of us on the tour. This was lovely as it made it such a personal experience. It must have been a fluke as the tour after us was full. We were taken to the beautiful gin cottage and found out all about the history of gin, how it used to be made and how it is now made.
We found out about all of the different botanicals used. There were jars with the botanicals they use to make their Darnley’s gin for us to smell. It was really interesting to find out how it all worked.
Next was the best part, the tasting. Darnley’s have 3 gins, Original Gin, Spiced Gin and Spiced Gin Navy Strength Edition. We were told a little about each gin, tested it straight, then added different mixers and enjoyed our gins. All of the gins had such unique flavours. My favourite was the spiced gin with ginger ale, we liked it so much that we bought some in the gift shop after.
After the tour we had some lunch (just simple sandwiches but they were so tasty) and had a look around the gift shop. We had such a great afternoon at Kingsbarns Distillery and I would definitely go back. I think this place would be just perfect for a hen or stag party, not only do they do a gin tour and tasting, they also do whisky tours. Click here to find out more about their whisky.
Are you a gin or a whisky fan? Why not learn a little more about them while tasting some unique flavours. Are you planning a hen or stag party but not sure what to do for it? Let me know in the comments.
